There are several test methods, destructive and non-destructive, which may be used to determine the water vapor transmission rate in existing concrete or hydrating free mix water in new concrete construction. Here a, 10mil plastic sheet is tightly taped to the concrete (ASTM D4263 "Standard Test Method for Indicating Moisture In Concrete by the Plastic Sheet Method"). A label is placed on the plastic sheet. The starting date, time, ambient temperature and relative humidity are recorded on the label. After 72 hours a dew point hygrometer is quickly inserted under one corner of the plastic sheet. The relative humidity under the plastic sheet is recorded and the plastic sheet removed. The area must be free of any dampness, discoloration or damp odor. A relative humidity under the plastic sheet of 79%, or lower, is required for the successful application of flooring or related materials.
