CAPILLARY MOISTURE TESTING OF EXISTING CONCRETE SLAB

Reference:  ASTM Test Method D 4263-83 (Reapproved 1993), Standard Test Method for Indicating Moisture in Concrete by the Plastic Sheet Method, prepared by the American Society for Testing and Materials.

Dear Mr. Lee:

At your request, Youngdahl & Associates, Inc. has performed a capillary moisture test of the existing concrete slab-on-grade at our office building.

Our office building was constructed in 1990 and Moxie 1800 was used in the concrete slab-on-grade. No visquene moisture barrier was placed below the concrete slab-on-grade.

On 23 February 1995, a moisture test was began in accordance with Reference noted above. The test was set up in the southeast corner of the electrical control room in an attempt to minimize damage and environmental changes. The test area was cleaned and the plastic sheeting was placed as required by the test method.

The test was performed for over 16 hours as required without any visible moisture noted. The test was then continued for an additional 110 hours, at which point, a heat lamp was placed at approximately 17 inches above the plastic sheeting.

A temperature reading at the end of the test noted that the temperature directly on the plastic sheeting under the heat lamp was approximately 106 0F. No visible moisture was noted throughout the testing period.

The results of our testing and additional notes can be found on Table 1 below. In addition, a copy of the ASTM Test Method D 4263-83 is enclosed.
